About the course
This course is designed as an introduction to the Hairdressing industry and to develop the skills required to be able to study and perform Hairdressing skills in a practical salon environment. Communication and character strengths are developed alongside working as a team.
Entry is by interview. The course requires GCSE (English and Maths) at grade E (2)
Some of the products used in the hairdressing and beauty industry contain nuts and therefore this occupation may not be suitable for those people with an allergy to nuts.
If English is not your first language an ESOL qualification at level 2 is required and an ESOL assessment will be required.
This course is designed to introduce the foundation skills in hairdressing to enable progression onto Level 1 certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering or an Apprenticeship.
Progression to Hairdressing or a Hairdressing Apprenticeship.
What you'll learn (core modules)
This course focuses on the students ability to organise study, prepare for salon services and communicate in an effective professional manner. Professional behaviour and teamwork are developed on a 4 day and 3 night residential trip at the beginning of the year. Attending this residential is a mandatory requirement. a fundraiser and community project then follows. The progression to hairdressing covers health and safety, styling women's' hair and plaiting and twisting. All these skills are practiced in a practical salon environment. Learners will be given expert theory and practical tuition.
Students aged 16 to 19 who do not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age of 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be on a unit by unit basis, each having both theory and practical elements to achieve, you will be given feedback as you progress through the skills and then once you are ready you will be prepared for assessment tasks. All achievement will be recorded on our ILP system and you will be given regular targets to achieve as you work through the qualification.

Where will the course take me?
Progress onto NVQ level 1 in Hairdressing and Barbering or an Apprenticeship in Hairdressing or Barbering. Then level 2 technical diploma in Hairdressing and Barbering.
Will I need any materials or equipment?
Upon enrolment for this course learners will receive order forms that list uniform requirements of the course. The uniform will consist of black tailored trousers, a tunic top, plain black cardigan and flat black closed shoes. Each learner will required to buy a recommended text book that supports the knowledge delivered for this course. You may need to consider an additional cost for trips and activities throughout the year.
How much will it cost?
There is Government funding for students between 16-9 years old. The cost of uniform, kit & equipment will be shared at enrolment.
