Advice & Help Centre

Overview of course

The course is usually a lot of fun and incorporates a good mixture of practical (hands on) as well as the necessary theory. By the end of the course you will understand how your camera works and what settings to use for any given situation. The course will give you an introduction to photography which will teach you the basics of photography, from camera controls and exposures to composition and lighting.

What will I learn?

You will learn basic elements of photography, such as the relationship between ISO, aperture and speed of shot, (how much light is allowed to enter the camera to create the picture). This will help you to understand which setting to use on your camera. You will look at how to get the best out of your camera and the technical side of shutter speeds, apertures, and different lenses. Finding out about composition - what makes a good photograph? Taking a look at studio lighting and how to use it to create very different effects. We will look at examples of successful work to support your learning. By the end of this course students should have the knowledge to better control how their photography turns out rather than pointing, clicking and hoping for the best!

Who is the course for?

Beginners, anyone with a camera, an interest in photography and looking to learn more

Will I have to provide anything?

All students will need to bring a camera (compact or SLR, film or digital), you are also welcome to bring other equipment along (cameras, laptops etc.) and share your opinions and views about your equipment with the class.
