About the course

This study programme is designed for our aged 19+ adult learners.

Please visit our 16-18 section for alternative courses.

This course is a recognised pathway into Teaching, Social Work, Heritage industry, Management,  civil service, Library services, Journalism, Legal professions, Mental Health Nursing and many other Higher Education degree programmes. It is designed to meet the needs of learners who may not have had the opportunity to enter higher education earlier in their lives. The course includes a wide range of study skills as well as professional careers guidance.

Daytime Programme:

Two days per week 9.15 - 16.30

 

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required to join this course because prior experience is considered as important as formal educational qualifications. Applicants interested in teaching will need to have passed GCSEs in mathematics, English and science. These subjects are available at the College. Applicants will be invited to an informal interview where they can find out more about the course from tutors and decide if the course is suitable for them. Applicants must be aged 19 or over as at the start of the course.

 

 

Qualifications

This nationally recognised Access course provides a route to higher education. It is an alternative to A levels and is designed to meet the needs of adult learners.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Academic themes studied will draw from the disciplines of English literature, Social History and Social Sciences. The course will familiarise learners with the core of study skills, simple statistical interpretation, research skill, critical thinking and writing. It is particularly suitable for adults seeking to develop study skills and confidence alongside their study of specific subjects. This course can be taken during the day or evening Bury St Edmunds Campus.

How will I be assessed?

There are a mixture of assessments on the Access course. These include essay writing; time controlled assessments; a course portfolio of Higher Education Study Skills; and an Extended Project. These assessments develop the students academic skills in line with University expectations; therefore, ensuring a smooth transition into degree level study programmes.

Where will this course take me?

Entry onto degree programmes. Automatic progression onto BA (Hons) degrees in English and History; Business Management and Psychology; History and Sociology and the Bsc (Hons) in Psychology and Sociology; all available at University of Suffolk Bury St Edmunds. Future careers include Teaching, the Heritage Industry, Social Work, Civil Service, Legal professions, Human Resource Management, Probation Service, Management and Retail and more.

How much will it cost?

Funding is available via Student Finance England in addition to other funding methods.

The course fees are waived if the student is under 24 years of age and has not completed a full Level 3 qualification.

Students over 24 years can finance their course through an Advanced Learner Loan.
