Entry requirements

There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the qualification and level for which you will be entered.

Qualifications

Functional Skills English (Edexcel). Entry Level 3, Levels 1 and 2

Our classes are small, friendly groups of like-minded people and our experienced tutors are keen to help you do as much as you feel possible. We are there to help you succeed!

You can take different levels of qualification from entry level, to Level 1, 2 and GCSE. Classes run daytime or evenings at centres throughout Suffolk, therefore you can choose which course best suits your needs.

All our qualifications are valued by employers and could be used to gain entry to other courses including degree.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This course will also provide you with English skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE, university and/or employment.

You will be part of a small, friendly classroom and will focus on building everyday practical skills such as letter writing, report writing, the use of formal and informal language and reading techniques. You will also take part in talks and discussions, working towards the reformed qualification in Functional Skills English.

The qualification comprises three assessments – reading, writing and speaking and listening.

How will I be assessed?

Examinations will be taken for reading and writing along with a speaking and listening assessment.

Speaking and listening will be assessed online. Reading and writing examinations will require attendance at a local learning centre.

There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

Your weekly three hour session will be split into two equal parts offering a mix of face to face teaching (50%) and remote home study (50%). Students will be expected to complete work set by the tutor at home, in order to prepare for the following week's face-to-face classroom session. Homework will be set and marked weekly.

The face-to-face sessions will be carefully planned by the tutor to deliver the information each student needs to succeed in their studies. Remote activities could include online and offline tasks. Once you enrol you will be given 1 ½ hour classroom based session that you will attend each week. Further guidance and support will be provided to ensure that you succeed at your home study too.

Where will this course take me?

Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher level functional skill or a GCSE.

How much will it cost?

If you are aged at least 19 years old by 1 August, have lived within the EU for the previous 3 years and do not already have a GCSE grade C or above in this subject then you qualify for full course funding.

I'm interested. What should I do now?

INDUCTION & ENROLMENT

Once you apply online, your centre team will send you all the information you need to enrol and get set up on your course remotely.

You will undertake online Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to assess the most appropriate level of study. It is vital that you complete this assessment on your own and to the best of your ability.

Your centre team will contact you once this is completed and talk you through your results and the level that has been set and your prior achievement – and you will agree the course level and your method of delivery. Identification will be confirmed, and the enrolment process completed. However please be aware that it will be the tutor's discretion to change your level if they feel this is not right for you, once you begin your course.
