At West Suffolk College we offer organisations and learners the chance to learn and develop the skills required to ensure engineering remains prominent in the local area. We offer Level 2 to Level 6 and work with employers across many different pathways such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Maintenance, Welding, Tool Making, Design, Installation etc. Our excellent facilities allow for learning to be conducted in a very supportive environment and our work based team helps to embed that classroom knowledge fully in the workplace.

Engineering at West Suffolk College provides a practical and theoretical introduction to mechanical and electronic engineering, computer aided drawing and microprocessing. You’ll get the skills to help solve the problems of tomorrow – from how aircraft work to the electronics in your mobile phone.

The Level 3 course could earn you enough UCAS points to study engineering at any UK university or take an advanced apprenticeship, working with an engineering firm and career off to an early start.

About the course

This exciting new course combines the core and introduces the learner to specialised area of engineering subjects.  Delivered full-time over the duration of 36 weeks, the course gives you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and the range of skills which are essential for a successful transition to Higher Education. This course will give you a thorough grounding in fundamental engineering principles, followed by more specialised skills as the course progresses.

 

The course will develop a range of important skills, which will enable progression and future success in study at degree level. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the necessary skills and confidence to pursue a variety of degree studies in engineering.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be 19 years of age or older as of 31st August 2021. Entry is by interview. Applicants will need to be motivated and be able to manage their own time. Learners will need to have a mature and responsible outlook, as they will be required to work with a high degree of independence throughout much of the course.

 

You will need to have achieved a minimum of Functional Skills Level 2 in both English and Maths.

Qualifications

This is a unique opportunity to achieve a qualification that gives entry to Higher Education. The qualification is the CAVA Access to Higher Education Diploma at Level 3 that can be completed from Pass grade to Distinction level.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Learners will be timetabled for two full days per week with independent study days which will support research and investigation. These units are delivered by professionals with a wealth of experience in both industry and academia in their specialist subject areas. In addition to the range of engineering  related units, there are a number of HE study skills units that will equip the learner with the tools required to study at the higher levels that a degree programme demands. The modules are shown below.

 

Ungraded:

HE Study Skills (Level 3, 6 credits)

Applied Electrical & Mechanical Science for Engineering (Level 3, 6 credits)*

Introduction to Engineering Mathematics (Level 3, 3 credits)*

 

Graded:

All level 3 and concerned with academic subject content:

Electrical/Electronic Principles (Level 3, 6 credits)

Mechanical Principles (Level 3, 6 credits)

Further Mathematics for Engineering (Level 3, 6 credits)

Engineering Drawing/CAD (Level 3, 6 credits)

Selecting and Using Programmable Controllers(Level 3, 6 credits)

Materials Science (Level 3, 6 credits)

Research Project (Level 3, 9 credits)

How will I be assessed?

Students are prepared and supported to help them to undertake a range of different assessments. Assessment strategies include essay writing, report writing, presentations, and exams - all of which prepare students for the assessments that would be normally undertaken at university.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

The Course is delivered at West Suffolk College at our STEM Centre.

Where will this course take me?

Progression routes following this course enable the learner to advance to a Degree or HNC  in a wide variety of specialist programmes at University. This may include the following examples of Degree Programmes, all of which are delivered at University Studies at West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds.

 

 

If the learner successfully completes a three-year degree programme such as those listed, the initial funding for the access course does not need to be repaid.

How much will it cost?

The course fees are waived if the student is under 24 years of age and has not studied a full Level 3 qualification.

Students over 24 years can finance their course through an Adult Learning Loan.
