About the course
This course is for those interested in obtaining a qualification at technician level which is equivalent to two A levels. Diplomas provide much of the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the National Occupational Standards for the sector. They are supported by the relevant Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) and/or Standards Setting Bodies (SSBs). The Edexcel Diplomas are recognised as Technical Certificates and form part of the Apprenticeship Framework.
Either a minimum of four GCSE passes at C grade or above to include mathematics and double science or another technology based subject; an Edexcel Level 2 Diploma in Engineering or other suitable entry qualifications at the correct level. All places are subject to an interview and accreditation of prior learning will be taken into account at this stage, particularly for mature learners.
The Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is awarded in conjunction with Edexcel.
What you'll learn (core modules)
This is a two year part-time course with an attendance pattern of one day per week. The course has been designed to provide candidates with a broad based education in the essential aspects of Mechanical Engineering at this level with the opportunity to progress to a higher level course. The units studied are: Year one - Mathematics, Health and Safety, CAD, Communications for Technicians, Mechanical Principles and Applications and Electrical and Electronic Principles. Year two - Further Mathematics, Properties and Applications of Materials, Engineering Project, Engineering Design and Hydraulics and Pneumatics.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by a range of practical activities and written assignments.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
The course will be delivered at our new STEM facility with state of the art classroom and practical labs.
Where will this course take me?
Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) or Foundation Degree in Engineering. The course can lead to a career in Mechanical Engineering Technician or Apprentice Mechanical Engineer.
