The overall aim of the BEng (Hons) Engineering (Mechanical) programme is to equip students with the fundamental knowledge commensurate for an incorporated engineer role within industry, or pursue Masters or PhD level qualifications. The BEng (Hons) Engineering (Mechanical) will follow-on from the successful completion of a relevant FdEng in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent Higher National Diploma / Level 5 Higher Education Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Our university offers 3-year full-time and 5-year part-time programmes to obtain a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering: The BEng (Hons) Engineering (Mechanical) comprises the final (3rd) year of the full-time programme, and the last 2 years of the part-time programme (the 4th and 5th years).
The curriculum provides detailed coverage of engineering materials and applied thermodynamics, whilst also preparing students for future supervisory roles through the exploration of lean transition within engineering organisations and change management. The course also provides advanced research skill development through the implementation of a final dissertation project that provides an opportunity for students to explore and develop higher-level project design and implementation. The programme has optional workshop experience opportunities for full time students across both mechanical and electrical disciplines to augment theoretical knowledge and assist in industry-linked project realisation. The focus is to produce work-ready engineers as well as prepare students for further study. This will be achieved through successful workplace/workshop application and a portfolio of evidence to support the ability to apply underlying technical principles within a practical environment.
What sets the course apart?
It's more than a qualification. Our course focuses on developing engineering undergraduates that have practical skills to augment academic knowledge; developing engineers that have real-world problem solving abilities.
The campus provides a range of support services for Higher Education students, including access to specialist software and study/research facilities. Facilities are tailored to small class sizes, resulting in a smaller student-to-lecturer ratio that naturally provides greater opportunities for 1-1 support. The campus also employs dedicated support-tutor facilities to assist with pastoral care.
The laboratory and workshop equipment is maintained to reflect current industry practices. Furthermore, the LearnUCS portal provides students with constant access to learning materials and facilitates contact with the tutors, online submission and feedback for coursework and laboratory reports. The Library and IT team both at Ipswich and West Suffolk College provides assistance with for Office 365 student study facilities, so that students can minimize any disadvantage from a shortfall in home-IT equipment.
The course is developed with industry over-sight to ensure that the curriculum is relevant to a wide array of engineering roles; to this end, employer links between the team and industry remain strong. This augments the Careers and Employability Advice mechanisms within the university to support students in seeking valuable internships and work experience during their study.
Many of the staff hold higher qualifications such as Masters and Doctoral qualifications, and/or professional accreditation at the Chartered Engineer level. The campus also encourages all staff to undertake teaching qualifications within the lifelong learning sector and higher education sector. The staff have a wide array of industrial expertise and research development that ensures curriculum is both contextually up to date and relevant. Industrial liaison is essential for the development of part time students and industry-linked projects, and our staff continue to undertake industrial fellowship opportunities to maintain their skills and support research within industrial contexts with an ultimate aim to develop and maintain our curriculum.

Many of our students have progressed into either further higher study at the MEng and/or PhD level, or full-time employment within regional and national organisations at the Incorporated Engineer level undertaking a wide array or design and project engineering roles.
