About the course
It is a well reported fact that there is currently a shortage of engineers with practical skills and this course will give you the basic skills to progress into a range of engineering disciplines including manufacturing and various maintenance disciplines in sectors such as, Aerospace, Armed Forces, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Renewable Energy and Rail sectors. The course is designed around project based learning and is designed to provide a fun and interesting learning environment with the course content linked to current and future engineering employers' workforce skills requirements.
This Engineering course is ideal for people starting out in engineering as it provides practical hands-on training and focuses on building broad-based practical skills and knowledge with a hands-on approach.
You will gain a formal Engineering qualification that is recognised by industry as the sector standard giving you a head start to gain an apprenticeship with one of the many local employers West Suffolk College works with. The course is open to both school leavers and those looking to change or further their careers. It is also suitable as a refresher course for updating engineering skills and for those wanting to learn new skills.
You will learn how to work effectively and safely. In addition to the practical skills you will develop, you will also improve your employability through the enhancement of your communication, numeracy and information technology abilities.
Grade 3 (D) in English and mathematics
You should be able to demonstrate a keen interest and aptitude for engineering and are willing and have the ability to develop your practical and hands-on engineering skills.
Please note: you will be required to complete an aptitude test and successful interview.

Where will the course take me?
Subject to successful interview and completion of this course, you may progress to higher levels of study within engineering in the college, apprenticeship or employment.
Completion of this course of study and further courses can provide a stepping stone and lead to modern apprenticeships or employment as a trainee in a wide range of engineering and technology enabled sectors.
Many students will progress into employment through an apprenticeship within the wide range of engineering sectors.
