This study programme is designed for 16 to 19 year olds (aged 19 to 24 for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

All courses take place on our Sixth Form Campus, therefore any applicants aged 25+ or over who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan may be required to complete a DBS check as part of the conditional offer to West Suffolk College. The cost to the applicant for a DBS is £30.00 and the DBS check can be completed through the college.

About the course

The Level 3 Hospitality and Events Management consists of 2 separate Level 3 90 credit diploma qualifications leading to an Extended Diploma in Hospitality. This program of study is for you if you are over 16 and wish to gain employment in Events Management or in the hospitality sector as a Food & Beverage Supervisor or progress onto university.

This qualification provides you with a good understanding of the role of an Events Manager and Supervisor in the Food and Beverage industry. It provides the depth of knowledge and understanding required to run the front of house service in different operations such as restaurant, bistro and brasserie, bar, restaurant reception, barista service and specialist events. You will develop both the hard and soft skills that will allow you to work in a variety of establishments and settings including hotels, restaurants, cafes, and specialist events or to run or manage your own restaurant or events business.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview with a minimum of 4 GCSE passes at A* - C level or a Level 2 or an equivalent qualification. A successful induction period will also be required for each student to ensure that they are on the appropriate pathway. It is important that all learners have an interest in some aspects of the hospitality industry and the rewards that it can bring to successful applicants.


Extended Diploma in Hospitality at the end of the 2 years.  You will also receive a L2 certificate in Food Hygiene.

- Practices and procedures that will protect the business, you, your team and customers

- How to deal with customer requirements such as those with special dietary requirements or access requirements?

- Safe storage, display and service of food and beverages



Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

Practical sessions are delivered in Edmunds, our onsite training restaurant with theory sessions held in classrooms on campus.

Where will the course take me?

The qualification will prepare you for employment in a variety of establishments, from a cafe bistro or pub to a Michelin starred restaurant. You may also want to develop your supervisory skills even further by following an apprenticeship programme or taking a hospitality degree or other higher education qualification.

Centres and providers work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training. Employers will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry and where possible work placements will be encouraged to develop learners' skills in this area.


Achieving this qualification will enable you to gain employment in the front of house area, typically in any of the following roles:


- Food and Beverage supervisor

- Restaurant Supervisor

- Bar Supervisor

- Front of House Supervisor

- Conference and event Supervisor

- Site supervisor
