Ask a questionOverview of course
This course covers both Dressmaking and Millinery, students can cover either subject:
Dressmaking - This course is designed for people who want to improve both the look and the quality of their dressmaking and will concentrate on the fitting of your individual garment using the French dressmakers Toile method.
Millinery - Students will be taught from a professional milliner to make handmade model hats that fit and flatter the wearer.
What will I learn?
Couture Dressmaking:
Students will start by making a body pattern using calico toiles to obtain an exact fit. With this pattern you will be able to produce a carefully constructed garment of your choice, concentrating on expert tailoring, sewing skills, a perfect fit and a professional finish.
Millinery:
Students will learn from a professional milliner how to make their own designer hat that will be more comfortable to wear than a machine made hat. You will be guided and taught techniques to create an individual and professional creation especially made for you.
Who is the course for?
This course is ideal for those who have basic sewing skill but would like to further their knowledge.
Will I have to provide anything?
Dressmaking students will need to bring stiff uncreased brown paper, scissors suitable for cutting paper, an HB pencil, scotch tape (green centre. Not sellotape) and an india rubber, fabric scissors and enough medium weight calico to make a toile i.e a fitted bodice and straight skirt. Calico varies in width from 36" to 60", you will need 3 metres of 36" or 1.50 metres of 60".
