About the course

Business and Retail is a second year option for those studying the Business Extended Diploma. Millions of people in the UK are employed in retailing, an industry we are exposed to daily by simply buying a pint of milk from the corner shop, watching an advert on television or browsing the internet for a new phone. At West Suffolk College, you can learn about this dynamic industry through interactive lessons and project based tasks.

To fully appreciate the retail industry, you need to get out there. During the course, you will be exposed to some successful retailers, both front and back of house. Visits will be linked to your course criteria, allowing you to gaining valuable insight into the running of real businesses. Throughout the course you will be supported by staff who have real life experience and a true passion for the retail industry.

Entry requirements

You will need to hold GCSE maths and English at Grade C (4) or above. In your first year of your Extended Diploma, you will need to have an excellent attendance and punctuality record.

Qualifications

Level 3 Business Expended Diploma (Retail)

What you'll learn (core modules)

You will gain an understanding of the retail industry, with live projects that will give you first hand experience of the retail industry.  Access to retailers both front and back of house will expose you to potential career paths, whilst giving you time to assess your future aspirations.  Developing your awareness of visual merchandising methods will allow you to analyse the techniques used by retailers and build your own creative displays. This is your chance to put your skills into practice and make a difference to your local community.

Benefits, skills and character strengths

You will need to have an interest in retail and be highly analytical by nature. You will enjoy approaching tasks in a creative and hands on manner, getting involved in interactive tasks and problem-solving.

A range of assessment methods will be used ranging from reports, presentations and professional discussions to e-portfolios and visual merchandising displays.
