About the course

This course offers a stimulating opportunity to learners who wish to pursue a career in the Construction Industry at a Technical or Trainee Manager Level.

 

Students will gain a broad insight into the construction industry ranging from the initial planning stage, design and building process and maintenance of housing, industrial and commercial buildings.

 

The course will also provide you with knowledge of the social, economic and cultural contribution of the built environment to individuals and the community. Students who have completed this course have successfully gone on to do well on Higher Education course and in careers which include Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Architecture, Architectural-Technology , Project Management , Civil Engineering , Planning Control and Building Control.

Entry requirements

You need either: A minimum of 4 GCSE's Grade (4) C or above, including maths and English at Grade C (4) in relevant subjects to include a Science, or a Level 2 Diploma in Construction - If progressing from a Level 2 vocational qualification, we would ideally expect you to have achieved GCSE Grade C (4) or above in maths and English to demonstrate competence at this level.

Qualifications

During the first year of this two year programme students will study for the Edexcel Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. At the end of the second year students who have successfully completed the full course will be awarded the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This is an exciting course for those who aspire to work in the Construction industry at Technician or Trainee Manager Level. It can be used to gain employment or a place on a higher education course in construction or related fields such as quantity surveying, architecture and civil engineering.

You will study 15 Units to give you a good grounding in the basics of construction and the built environment. You will learn about building design processes, construction techniques, co-ordinating construction projects and surveying, as well as developing an appreciation of how practical construction skills fit in with the co-ordination of a project. Your course will include the following mandatory units: Health and Safety, Construction Principles, Construction Design, Tendering & Estimating, Construction Technology, Building Control, Graphical Detailing, Surveying and Construction Project Management. The remainder of the units you will take have been chosen to provide you with the widest range of career options.

 

Your English and maths will be assessed in all of your work throughout your course, but you may also be required to study English and/or Maths to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured classes. Students will also attend a series of lectures and workshops which relate Heritage buildings and the Restoration and preservation of Historical buildings.

 

Throughout the duration of the course learners may also be involved in additional projects such as design competitions, and project management opportunities should these become available throughout the duration of the course.

 

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

 

Where will the course take me?

Following successful completion the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment previous learners have progressed in to higher education to study on a range of Higher National Diploma (HND) or degree programmes in for example construction management, quantity surveying, building surveying, architectural technology, project management or other construction related programmes. Students wanting to continue to study locally will have an opportunity with the degrees and professional courses at the college which have excellent routes into local professional employers.

 

Alternatively you could begin your career as a trainee quantity surveyor, building surveyor, architectural technologist, construction manager or civil engineer and study part time for a degree in your chosen career, or perhaps pursue an apprenticeship? The college will advise students at an appropriate stage and can support access into these routes.

 

Possible careers - Construction Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Building Surveyor, Architectural-Technologist, Project Manager, Civil Engineer, Building Control Officer, Planning Officer, Health & Safety Advisor.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Learners who attend this course must purchase a Scale rule, and drawing instruments as well as the Level 3 Course book, and either purchase or have access to other relevant publications either in hard copy or electronically. It should also be noted that the course offers some field trip opportunities throughout the two years, most are free to the learner however there may be some cost involved on occasions.

 

Personal Protective Equipment including safety boots is also required for site visits and practical work. Full details of equipment required will be provided when the learner enrols on the course PPE must be worn when required.

 

Each learner will be required to provide their own stationery (for example pens, pencils, drawing equipment (including set squares, compass, pencils etc), folders, scientific calculator, storage device) and will be expected to bring these materials to each lesson as required. It should also be noted that the course offers some field trip opportunities throughout the two years, most are free to the learner however there may be some cost involved on occasions.
