About the course
On this course, you will develop the skills required to carry out routine services and repairs of light vehicles including removing and replacing engine parts, auxiliary electrical components, and chassis units as well as learning how to conduct pre- and post-work inspections.
This L2 qualification is designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements. This qualification is assessed using written phase tests throughout the year plus completion of an electronic portfolio based on completion of practical (workshop) tasks and online exams.
This Level 2 qualification is designed to help learners aged 16-19+ further develop technical skills and insights along with key personal and social skills, behaviours and attitudes to build confidence. Successful students will achieve this by using practical and written tasks set in a practical automotive context along with online exams. The course challenges learners to use their knowledge, skills and initiative to tackle new activities. They will enhance learners' social interaction and help them to develop skills to prepare them as they look for, obtain and maintain employment. The qualification prepares learners to further develop their knowledge and skills across a variety of specialist areas to prepare them for further studies and potentially enter into a job role they desire.
Students will practice working effectively and safely. In addition to applying the practical skills developed the course also works to improve your employability, communication, numeracy and IT abilities. Work experience is a key course element.

Entry requirements
Grade 4 English Language and Grade 4 Mathematics . If you are able to demonstrate a keen interest and aptitude for working with vehicles and are willing and have the ability to develop your practical and hands-on skills, you may also be considered as a learner.
Please note: you will be required to complete a successful interview.

What you'll learn (core modules)
This Level 2 qualification is designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements. It also provides the knowledge requirements for its related VCQ and forms the knowledge component of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for Light Vehicle).
This qualification is broken down into the following five sections:
- Chassis Technology
- Servicing and inspection
- Engine Technology
- Electrical & Electronic Technology
- Transmission Technology
- General Aspects e.g. health and safety, legal aspects and organisational requirements.
There is the requirement for these units to be assessed through the use of phase tests throughout the year.
The assessment of this VRQ is made up of 2 components:
a. IMI Awards set Practical Tasks
b. IMI Awards set Online Testing
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

Where will the course take me?
Subject to successful interview and completion of this course, you may progress to a Level 3 qualification and other appropriate destinations. Completion of this course of study and further courses can provide a stepping stone and lead to modern apprenticeships or employment as a trainee in a wide range of vehicle and technology enabled sectors. Many students will progress into the Level 3 Motorsport Engineering course within the department.
