About the course

This specialist course will give students a broad and creative education in the world of conceptual architecture. The course will focus on innovative and highly conceptual structures - architecture, spatial / interior design and environments.  We will be designing the world of the future and worlds for our entertainment/imagination... such as awe-inspiring towers, global bridges, future cities, underground habitation hives, transport structures for a new civilisation. Designs and outcomes will be for building proposals - but equally for games design, film/TV/Theatre production, futuristic visions and solutions to the habitation of our changing planet.
Students will work and design in traditional and contemporary approaches - for example, using our outstanding digital facilities with highly qualified staff to produce incredible virtual structures as well as innovative model making skills to transform ideas into physical forms.
The course is part of The School of Art & Design. We are national leaders in creative education nationally. We have grown to over 500 students across an impressive portfolio of specialist courses - including degree level. We are located in our own building - Leonardo House. We have the highest professional standards and expectations from all students who progress to the very best universities in the UK and into the global flourishing creative industries. An incredible experience and future awaits you.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview (informal). Candidates will need either a minimum of four GCSEs Grade C/4 or above, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification. One of these must be in either English or Maths - or both. Applicants will have the opportunity to discuss the course content and requirements during their interview and provide a portfolio of work demonstrating their creative ability (this includes sketchbooks and coursework form school). Studying a creative subject at GCSE level is not a requirement. Applicants will need to be able to be motivated, manage their own time and have a mature outlook.

Successful students will achieve a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Internal pathway = Architecture). This is equivalent to 3 'A' levels, and this qualification is what universities and employers are looking for. UAL is University of Arts London the largest and most prestigious Network of London Universities and largest arts awarding body in Europe. Please note that from September 2020 the qualification title may change to UAL Applied General Level 3.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Students will be educated in rapid design skills such as structural drawings, rendering skills, innovation, architecture for function, architecture for film/TV/games, digital media software and contextual studies. Students work with both traditional and modern techniques and technologies. Traditional, studio-based techniques such as drawing, model making, photo-montage and digital illustration are delivered to develop raw visual communication skills. Alongside this, students are taught on industry-standard Apple Mac computers by highly skilled professionals. Students also learn to use software such as Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
See some of the work our students have created on Instagram.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
